Hobart Hurricanes came out on top in the New Year’s Day clash at Blundstone Arena, led by the blade of Ben McDermott.
Chris Green led from the front as skipper with an unbeaten 33 as the Sydney Thunder posted 8/150 from their 20 overs.
Despite wickets for Tanveer Sangha, Nathan McAndrew and Daniel Sams at regular intervals, McDermott’s unbeaten 50, on his return to the side, guided the hosts to a seven-wicket triumph.
At the top of the day, Cameron Bancroft continued his fine form since making the move to Sydney Thunder, his 21 handing him the BKT Golden Cap as he passed 200 runs for BBL|13.
Cameos from Ollie Davies (20) and Sams (25) then laid the platform for Green to lift the total to 8/150 off the 20 overs, the skipper ending with 33* from just 17 deliveries.
In reply, Matthew Wade, hampered by a back injury, fell to the impressive Sangha early on, before a fine Sams catch in the outfield accounted for Caleb Jewell, McAndrew the bowler.
Sams removed Mac Wright for 34, but McDermott (53*) powered on before Corey Anderson finished the game in style with a maximum at the start of the 19th over.
