Thunder’s Daniel Sams Ruled Out for Remainder of Season

Sydney Thunder all-rounder Daniel Sams has been ruled out for the remainder of the KFC BBL|14 season following a challenging string of events stemming from Thunder’s match in Perth last week against the Scorchers.

During the game, Sams was involved in an on-field collision with fellow teammate Cameron Bancroft. He suffered a concussion from the incident and entered the mandatory Cricket Australia 12-day concussion protocol. Sams successfully completed the protocol and has fully recovered from the concussion.

What wasn’t apparent at the time, however, was a separate injury sustained earlier in the same match. Before the collision, Sams briefly left the field, with side pain. Sams returned to the game hopeful to finish the match. Following the concussion incident, the team was optimistic 12-days rest would see him recover.

As Sams progressed through his concussion protocols his side pain became evident. Further medical examination and scans confirmed a side strain injury that will rule him out for the remainder of the tournament.

Thunder General Manager, Trent Copeland, expressed his support for Sams and said he still has a very important role to play for Thunder.

“Daniel has demonstrated incredible resilience over the past week, and it’s unfortunate to lose him for the remainder of the season. His contributions on and off the field have been invaluable, but his health and recovery must come first. The entire team is behind him, and we’ll be supporting him every step of the way.

“Daniel has been a cornerstone of this club for years and is highly respected by everyone in the squad. While he won’t be out on the field, he’ll remain an integral part of our group. His calm demeanour, wealth of experience, and leadership qualities will be crucial in the changeroom as we push through the remaining matches.”

Speaking on his injury, Sams extended his thanks to all those who have supported him throughout the tournament.

"I just want to express my gratitude and thanks to everyone who has supported me throughout my recovery. The messages of encouragement and care have meant so much to me during this time.

"I’m super disappointed not to be out there on the field, contributing to the success the boys are having and being part of the push for the title. But I’m incredibly proud of this group and excited to see what they can achieve for the rest of the season."

Thunder are rallying behind Sams as he focuses on his recovery. The team will continue to surge forward in his absence, with Friday’s Sydney Smash at the SCG crucial to their season.
